The luxury hotel Söl'ring Hof, located between the dunes of Rantum, is one of the gems of hospitality on the island of Sylt. In recent months, directors Jan-Philipp Berner and Dirk Iserlohe, with the support of the Berlin-based planning office KDREI, have carefully modernized the traditional hotel, integrating three new climate-controlled wine rooms by the South Tyrolean producer METEK into the historic structure of the building.
"The Söl'ring Hof is a small hotel that has grown over the course of more than two decades, so the conversion was, in part, a matter of millimetric precision," says Jan-Philipp Berner, highlighting the particular challenge faced by the designers and craftsmen. METEK’s task was, on one hand, to showcase the finest wines from the hotel’s 800-label collection in a wine showroom right next to the reception, literally putting the hotel’s oenological expertise on display. At the same time, the goal was to combine functionality and elegance to best suit the 5-star hotel environment and meet the daily needs of the four sommeliers.
"Directly behind the showroom is another climate-controlled wine room with a temperature of 6°C for white wines, accessible through an elegant frosted glass door, followed by a third room for red wines with a constant temperature of 16°C," explains Wolfgang Passler, CEO of METEK Austria, who was responsible for the design and installation of the systems in close collaboration with designer Helge Pahlke, FCSI, from KDREI. "The goal was to maximize capacity, so now it’s possible to store up to 3,400 bottles on a total of 20 m², thanks to a sophisticated shelving system."
"The installation of the wine rooms in the available space was a challenge," reports Passler, who spent two weeks on-site in Rantum with his team for this purpose. "Among other things, we had to add insulation to the walls and floor. Additionally, laying the connections to the wastewater and refrigeration technology in the existing building structure turned out to be quite difficult. Fortunately, consultations with the operators and designers at KDREI always went smoothly, even when none of us were on-site. Helge Pahlke understands our work and is able to communicate it to the client in a way that’s easy to understand."
Pahlke, who is also very satisfied with the collaboration, adds: "METEK did a great job of tackling the task of storing as many bottles as possible in a representative way. Every time a problem arose, the right solutions were quickly found. The materials and the quality of the workmanship were also up to par."
Jean-Philipp Berner is full of praise as well: "In a building like ours, it was important that the WeinKlimaräume not only fit perfectly into the designated areas but that their visual impact was impressive as well. METEK did a fantastic job from day one to the final requests and delivered our requirements 1:1. It’s clear that these are professionals at work, whose quality standards are 100% in line with ours. Our four sommeliers are thrilled with the functionality and flexibility of the WeinKlimaräume. We are proud to be able to work with them in the future. Our guests are also very impressed."
New dimensions of an elegant lifestyle. In addition to wine climate cabinets and rooms, glass is also used for façades, swimming pool shutters, and panoramic sliding roofs. Every project begins with a shared vision and the courage to find new solutions that enhance the overall concept of the building in question. Execution is based on collaboration and a solution-oriented approach, focused on quality with technical expertise, craftsmanship, and high-quality materials. Aesthetic appeal and elegance are the top priorities.
